Our Sling library meets are friendly, informal drop in sessions where can see and try on a number of carriers, hire a carrier or receive tips on a carrier you already own. There is no need to book, everyone is seen on a first come first served basis or whatever works best with sleeping and feeding babies, and you’re welcome join in and chat to other parents while you wait.
Sessions run from the Barnes Children’s Centre (Mortlake), Kingston Town Children’s Centre and Madeleine’s home. Full dates and times of upcoming sessions are below. Sessions at either Children’s Centre are free of charge (although donations towards running the sling library are extremely appreciated), while sessions at Madeleine’s home are a suggested donation of £3 per family for those coming for advice only (and free for those hiring or purchasing a carrier). All donations go toward insurance, training and the purchase of new carriers. Please note that we do not receive funding from the Children’s Centres, but they do let us use their space for free. There are no sessions at Madeleine’s home during April, May and June due to Refurb. Weekend sessions will resume after the building works have been completed.
Please note that Sling Library sessions can be busy and one-to-one help often limited to 10-15 minutes each. This is usually enough time to demo and try 1 carrier type per family (maybe two on a quieter day), so perfect if you have a good idea of the type of thing you would like to try, or you already own a carrier you’d like to learn to use better. Whereas if you are totally new to baby wearing and would like to learn about and compare different carrier types, have a more indepth questions, or you have been given several carriers and would like help with more than 1 please consider booking a private consultation instead – prices start from as little as £15 for upto 30 minutes, or check out our workshops.
Good to know before you come:
While there are currently over 90 carriers in the Sling Library collection – it is usually only possible to bring around 25-30 carriers to each of the children’s centre session (as this is the limit Madeleine can physically carry!). So if you are coming to try or buy a particular carrier or a particular brand and would like to ensure they are available at that session for you to try please do drop Madeleine a quick email in advance (email@example.com). This will ensure those slings are added to the packing list for that session.
Hiring a carrier
All our carriers are available to hire for two weeks, one month or 3 months at a time and will be due back at or before the appropriate sling library session. Hiring a carrier can be the perfect way to determine whether that carrier really works well for your whole family before you buy. We charge between £5-15 for 2 weeks, and £10-30 for 1 month. Full details of prices are here.
We also offer 3 month hires on stretchy wraps and Caboo. These are two of the best options for a newborn baby, and can be an absolute sanity-saver in those early days. However, as most babies and parents are ready to move onto a different carrier after the “fourth trimester” period it can feel like a waste to purchase one for such a short amount of time. So to help we offer 3 month hire of a stretchy wrap for £20 or £25 for a Caboo (versus £40-45 or £55-70 to purchase one new respectively).
To hire, we require you to fill in a hire form for each carrier you hire. This form includes your full name, address and contact details – all personal information is collected only for the purpose of contacting you during/after your hire as required and is kept in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and General Data Protection Regulation 2018. We also ask that you comply with our terms and conditions for hire which can be viewed here and a digital copy is supplied with each hire.
Buying a Carrier
We have a small stock of carriers available to purchase; Ergo Omni 360, Hana Baby wraps, Close Caboo, Connecta, Izmi Baby, Beco Gemini and Beco 8 carriers. We also have discount codes for a number of companies selling carriers, so we can help you get a good deal on whatever carrier you choose.
Free on street parking is available outside Madeleine’s home and the Barnes Children’s centres. If you are coming via Sat Nav please enter our postcode (SW14 7HU) rather than street address as there are two Lower Richmond Roads in London – we are the one in East Sheen.
Please note we do ask those attending these sessions to fill in our sign in sheet, which asks for names of those attending, and optional contact details. This information is collected to satisfy the terms of my professional insurance which requires me to have a record of who I have advised and when. All personal information is kept in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and General Data Protection Regulation 2018. This information will only be used to contact you in the future if you have explicitly asked for more information.
